North Warwickshire Cycle Way Red Route
A touch of George Eliot
Corley Moor to Astley
Distance: 4.89 miles
Download a route file for use with your GPS device.
Nearest parking: Bull and Butcher public house welcome cyclists that wish to start and end their ride here. Food can be pre-ordered by telephone. There are cycle racks and water bottles can be refilled.
The section: This area is steeped in history. The novelist George Eliot lived on the nearby Arbury Estate and her parents were married at the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin in Astley. The beautifully restored Astley Castle was home to Lady Jane Grey – who was Queen for just nine days! Both the Castle and Church are hidden from the road but can be accessed by a short walk from the route.
The terrain: After you cross the M6 Bridge you will start a steady climb on Breach Oak Lane. Howe Green Lane and Windmill Lane are also undulating with 2-3 short spikey climbs. Please take care at the Corley main junction which can get busy at times.
