Disabled person reductions

Who can get the reduction?

The application must be made by the person (or one of the persons) liable for the Council Tax on the property. It is not necessary for that person to be disabled, so long as someone resident there is substantially and permanently disabled and certain other conditions are fulfilled.

How much can you get?

You will pay your Council Tax as if your house was one valuation band lower. For those in band A the reduction will be 1/9 of the charge for band D.

What are the conditions?

There must be at least one person who is substantially and permanently disabled in the house. This can be an adult or child.

The person can be disabled either by illness, injury, congenital deformity or otherwise.

The person does not need to be in receipt of state benefits.

Doctors may be asked to confirm that the person is disabled.

In addition, one of the following must be provided in the house:

  • A room predominantly used by the disabled person to meet the needs of their disability.
  • A second bathroom or second kitchen needed by the disabled person.
  • A wheelchair used indoors by the disabled person

How do I apply?

If you wish to apply for the Disabled Band Reduction you can download the application form here. Alternatively you can email us or call the office using the details on this page and we will send you one.

What happens next?

We usually arrange to visit to confirm the details of the application.

You will be notified if you qualify for the reduction.

If you do not qualify then you will be given the reasons why we feel unable to grant a reduction along with your rights of appeal.

If you do qualify then each year you will receive a review letter to confirm that the situation is still the same.

You should however notify us immediately either in writing, by e-mail using the contact details on this page
