Deputy Prime Minster Angela Rayner announced in the House of Commons today the Councils that have been selected for major reorganisations to take place.
Warwickshire isn’t one of the six that have been announced, and the new devolution areas who will get new mayors in May 2026 are Cumbria, Cheshire and Warrington, Greater Essex, Hampshire and Solent, Norfolk and Suffolk, and Sussex and Brighton.
This means that Warwickshire County Council elections will go ahead as planned for Thursday 1st May 2025.
The Government will however write to all areas that have two tiers of local government, such as Warwickshire, requiring them to submit options for moving to a single structure – either one large Council across all of Warwickshire or a number of smaller, more local single tier Councils.
Leader of the Council, David Wright said “We will always welcome change and work in partnerships with other organisations however we were worried about the timescales being imposed by central government. For now, I’m pleased that North Warwickshire Borough Council hasn’t been chosen by the government for the first tranche of devolution and reorganisation; our focus always has and will continue to be on the services we provide to the residents of North Warwickshire and to ensure that whatever happens in the future the needs of North Warwickshire are not lost if it becomes part of a larger Local Authority."
