Why we don't take large items of cardboard side waste

The rear of the refuse collection vehicle is fitted with automatic bin lifts, if you take time to look at the rear of the vehicle you will see that they are all fitted with red barrier arms that stick out on each side. These arms are a safety feature for our loaders, this area is the no go zone also known as the crush or kill zone, the only thing that is allowed beyond this point is a wheelie bin. This safety feature is a national standard and fully endorsed by the Heath and Safety Executive.

The arms are a critical health and safety feature, and no one is allowed inside the crush/kill zone. This makes it impossible for the recycling teams to take any side cardboard as this would require them to go inside the crush zone to throw the cardboard into the rear of the vehicle.

We understand that being unable to take large items of cardboard is an inconvenience, however, I do hope you appreciate that we must put the health and safety of our staff first.
